Belmar finally repeals an anti-sandcastle building law that had been on the books for 20 years.

The sands of time have run out on a Belmar law that required beachgoers to get written permission from the town council before building sand castles on its beaches. The ordinance, which was repealed in March, was on the borough’s books for 20 years despite Belmar being the host of the state’s largest sand-sculpting contest for 25 years. “Since it was a ridiculous law, I suggested we repeal it, and the council agreed,” says Mayor Matt Doherty. “I hope it helps promote Belmar as a family-friendly destination.” This year’s New Jersey Sandcastle Contest is slated for July 13 from 8 am to noon at 18th Avenue Beach.
