Are you and your mate looking for a change in altitude? You can find it in Hunterdon County, a hotbed of Garden State hot-air ballooning. A balloon ride provides breathtaking views, lasting memories and an excuse (if you need one) to clasp your loved one tightly as you soar 500 to 5,000 feet above one of New Jersey’s most scenic regions.

In Flight Balloon Adventures, based in Clinton, is one of several Hunterdon County operations offering hot-air ballooning. In Flight’s voyages start at one of three departure areas near its headquarters. You’ll get a quick orientation, and you can even help inflate the balloon.

The really adventurous part is landing. Owner Tom Baldwin says varying wind conditions make it hard for pilots to predict exactly where they’ll touch down. But not to worry—the ground crew follows each balloon’s course.

Once back on terra firma, it’s time for a tailgate party featuring champagne, hors d’oeuvres and a chance to chat with other couples and pilots. Baldwin says about four to six balloons fly at a time. The ride lasts from 45 minutes to more than 60 minutes, but the entire experience—including set up and take down—requires three to four hours. The fee for a basic two-person ride is $590 per couple. For an additional $65, you can purchase a dinner package at the Spain Inn II (1045 Route 173, Asbury; 908-479-4084, spaininn.net). Or make your balloon ride into a weekend getaway with an overnight B&B package for $825.

The best wind conditions occur at sunrise or two hours before sunset. “The rural area provides many scenic backdrops and panoramas such as the Delaware River and Water Gap, rolling hills and occasional wildlife and birds,” says In Flight pilot Jim Buzby. “On a good day we can see the New York City and Philadelphia skylines.”
