High Point State Park
A peak that lives up to its name as the highest point in the state provides breathtaking views at 1,803 feet above sea level. With 11 trails, including part of the Appalachian Trail that makes its way through Jersey in the Kittatinny Mountains, High Point has something for everyone—easy walking as well as rocky terrain. 1480 Route 23, Sussex (973-875-4800).
Beaver Brook Trail
To get to the beaver colony halfway up the 6.2-mile hike, you have to make it through some tiresome and rugged terrain first. The nocturnal creatures will not be out, but you will be able to admire their handiwork on the Beaver Brook near Farny State Park in Marcella.
Jenny Jump State Forest
This quiet Warren County hiking spot got its name from a local legend—when “Jenny” was ambushed by a Lenape tribe, her father told her to jump to save her purity. It is a very serene walk filled with massive boulders (created by glacial movements) that lead to panoramic views of the Kittatinny Mountains, the Gap, and the Great Meadows. Hope (908-459-4366).
Merrill Creek Reservoir
Seven well-marked trails surround the 650-acre reservoir, including the 5.5-mile Perimeter Trail. With resident bald eagles in their tenth nesting season, nature lovers are in for a treat at this Harmony Township retreat. 34 Merrill Creek Rd, Washington (908-454-1213; merrillcreek.com).
Mt. Tammany
Located in Worthington State Forest near the Delaware Water Gap, this moderate climb is perfect to combine with activities like canoeing or fishing. From Dunnfield Creek, follow the marked trails for extraordinary views of the Gap, or venture off to the nearby Sunfish Pond.
