The Old Power List

The last time New Jersey Monthly assembled a list of the state’s “Most Powerful People,” we stopped at 25 names. That was July 2002 and the ranked list was topped by then-Governor James E. McGreevey. Six years later, it’s no surprise that McGreevey has fallen off of our list.

But despite the fact that we have expanded from 25 to 101 names, only seven of those identified as powerful in 2002 appear on this year’s list. Those names are highlighted below. (Of course, Senator Robert Menendez would be on the current list if we did not exclude members of the House and Senate.)

11.    Raymond V. Gilmartin, president, CEO, Merck & Co.
12.    William L. Gormley, state senator
13.    Joseph Santiago, state police superintendent
14.    Charles Wowkanech, president, N.J. AFL-CIO
15.    Reverend Reginald T. Jackson, executive director, Black Ministers Council of New Jersey
16.    Jane E. Kenny, regional administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
