Second Street Bakery (Jersey City)
Owner Anna Siniscalchi claims the sausage bread phenomenon started here nearly 40 years ago. This much is sure: A hole-in-the-wall with paper menus on the windows and space for maybe six adults (and no tables), Second Street has been baking great crusty bread in its coal oven for half a century. People line up at lunchtime for sandwiches loaded with (where to begin?) house-made mozz, meatballs, thin-sliced fried eggplant, roasted red peppers, garlicky broccoli rabe, breakfast fixings, Italian sausage…Room for dessert? Get a sugar-dusted ricotta calzone ($2). 402 Second St, 201-420-1793—CB
White House Sub Shop (Atlantic City)
Hard hit by Sandy, White House didn’t reopen until January 3. New floor, new electric, but not a lick of damage to the hundreds of framed photos, many of them vintage, that cover the walls. Joe DiMaggio, the Beatles and lesser lights still gaze down benignly on the narrow booths, where serious sandwich eaters pack themselves in. Half a Special (provolone, salami, capicola, ham) is $7.40. A whole ($14.80) easily feeds two. The Chicken Cacciatore (includes green peppers, onions, mushrooms and special sauce, $6.95 and $13.90) is a veritable banquet. 2301 Arctic Ave, 609-345-7827, whitehousesubshop.net—RS
